Celtic chief Wilson promises very active few weeks of early recruitment

Interim chairman Brian Wilson has promised Celtic will be very active with their recruitment in the coming weeks as he issued a renewed call for unity among the fanbase.

The Hoops hierarchy were the subject of protests from supporters for much of the past season over a perceived lack of ambition in the transfer market which led to the resignation of frustrated boss Brendan Rodgers in October.

Martin ONeill returned to help steady the ship and deliver an unlikely Premiership and Scottish Cup double, and the 74-year-old has now agreed to stay in charge for another year.

Asked in a club interview if the veteran manager would be given the resources to improve the squad for the upcoming campaign, Wilson said: Absolutely, and that is very much part of the basis on which hes wanted to come back and weve wanted him to come back.

Its going to be a very active next few weeks, and we must come out of it with a stronger squad. Its worth mentioning maybe for all the criticisms last year, that eight of our players are at the World Cup. We had a lot of very, very good players, so we want to not only retain that strength but also to build on it.

Wilson said the board had admitted previous mistakes on their part and has called on supporters to ensure there is no repeat of the division that plagued Celtic for much of the past year.

We are going to have a full stadium and it should also be a united stadium, he said, looking ahead to the new campaign. Time and time again, I have said and other colleagues have said that mistakes were made last season, that the board made mistakes, individuals made mistakes.

All of that has been admitted, but everyone has to look at themselves and look at their role in the earlier parts of last season, and the lesson is that division doesnt work.

Division is bad for the team, its bad for the club, and ultimately, its bad for success and what we all want to share in. Lets not have repetitions of that.

Nobodys ever going to be united in praise of board or manager, probably, or anyone else. But let these divisions take place outside of the stadium and lets have a unity that undoubtedly helped the team over the line in the end last season.
