Jonny Clayton ready to go all the way at World Cup of Darts with new team-mate Nick Kenny: 'You don't turn down the chance to put the Welsh shirt on'

Wales' Jonny Clayton is a two-time World Cup of Darts winner and, with a new team-mate in Nick Kenny by his side, the goal of a third is still very much in sight.

When the teams were announced, the biggest surprise came in the Welsh line-up.

Gerwyn Price did not make himself available for selection for the second time in three years, Kenny instead joining an in-form Jonny Clayton as the No 7 seeds.

Clayton and Kenny got off to a winning start in the group stages, coming up with a 4-1 victory over Lithuania's Darius Labanauskas and Mindaugas Barauskas in Group C.

'The Ferret' said pre-match that he had the utmost faith in his new partner, and after their victory he made clear that they are here to deliver Welsh pride and a third World Cup win.

Clayton had "no qualms" about playing alongside Kenny, with whom he represented Wales back in his BDO days, and is happy to play the role of experienced partner.

"I enjoyed every second of it. Like I said to him before, you won't get a more passionate bloke than this man," Clayton said.

"He is fantastic. When he sticks on that Welsh shirt, it means everything to him. There's two of us in the Welsh team. When we put this on, it is everything.

"As a Welshman, as a proud Welshman, you don't turn down the chance to put a Welsh shirt on.

"There is more to come from us. That was just a little warm-up and hopefully we can prove this is the first of many interviews this weekend.

"We have played enough in the BDO system. We know each other very, very well .I know Nick was only starting with the Welsh team and I was leaving, but through the ranks, through the BDO system, we know each other. We know everything about each other.

"I knew after Gezzy pulled out, my mate was Nick, and I had no qualms with that at all, because I knew this guy can play darts."

Kenny was over the moon to get Wales a crucial opening win on his World Cup debut and felt he played solidly alongside Clayton.

He said he could understand Welsh frustration at world No 8 Price being unavailable for the tournament, but would be doing everything in his power to go as far as possible.

"I'll admit, to do it with Jonny is even better. I thought I played alright," Kenny said.

"I thought that I showed that I was in the game a little bit, but as soon as we were 1-1, the boss took over and the finishing was class.

"It was solid, but there is more to come from us, definitely.

"Maybe (we are a little bit underestimated), but I'm not as good as Gezzy. Everyone knows that.

"When I played tonight, the 82 checkout was a crucial part of the match and I had the bottle to hit the double top and we won.

"The only thing we wanted to do today was win because if we lose, we're probably out.

"I feel sorry for the Welsh fans in a way, because their best two aren't in it, but I'm the next one in. What more can I do?

"I'm just here and I'm privileged to be here. I'm absolutely buzzing."
